"Mr. Moonlight" |
The model in my college drawing class had slightly elongated
features and a warm benevolent smile. During a break, I decided to play
upon those features further distorting his forehead and his marvelous chin.
After several successive drawings, I started to curve these features in
order to fit them on the page. Suddenly it hit me: "This guy looks The Man
in the Moon!" A month or so later my teenage niece was paging through my
sketchbook and came upon these drawings. Quite excited, she proclaimed "It's
Mr. Moonlight!" The name stuck. The drawing also stuck because she took
one of the line drawings on newsprint and stuck it over her bed - and there
it stayed throughout her teenage years - I believe it even went to college.
I noticed it one day - old yellowed and frayed, took the original back to
the studio and did a full color composition which I presented to her and
her husband as a Christmas gift. What you see is a copy of the original
which still hangs over her bed.
